Missile Defence – the facts
The US intends to build a Missile Defence system to protect the territory of the US. The proposed system would involve bases in Britain, Poland and the Czech Republic.
This system, which is based on the use of Early-Warning Radar (EWR) facilities and batteries of Interceptor Rockets, would not protect any country in which components are based.
In fact, its designation as defensive is highly dubious. A functional system would enable the US to launch a nuclear strike anywhere in the world without fear of reprisals. This would significantly increase the likelyhood of nuclear weapons being used.
In addition to this, it is seen by the US military as the first step towards deploying weapons in space. This has been a long-term goal of the United States.
The British government has given permission for the use of Fylingdales and Menwith Hill, in Yorkshire, as part of the proposed system. It is highly likely that ‘RAF’ Croughton, a major US base which handles one third of US military communications in Europe, will form part of the proposed system.
Now is the time to show our opposition to this – before it is too late!
