oxford indymedia screening for May Day - SUNDAY 2ND MAY - 7.30pm - OCSET, 220 Cowley Road
Local film maker Anne-Marie Sweeney will present her own film "WOMEN ON THE WATERFRONT", an intimate portrait of women's participation in the dispute.
The main feature will be the excellent "DOCKERS", a feature film on the strike scripted by the dockworkers themselves, with Jimmy McGovern and Irvine Welsh.
The Liverpool Dockworkers' strike was a new model in its use of the internet to garner international solidarity outside of the union bureaucracy. Another novelty was the linking-up of anti-roads environmental protesters with the labour movement, where each learnt from the other. And who can forget the fashionable "DoCkers" T-shirts, subverting Calvin Klein? Overall, the strike was a sort of Seattle before Seattle, with important lessons for today's social forum "movement of movements".
As part of the regular programme of activities at OCSET, Oxford's new social centre, "Sunday Night is Film Night". In addition to oxford indymedia's monthly screenings in East Oxford Community Centre, there will be a weekly screening on the other three Sundays of the month at OCSET.
Next oxford indymedia screening - Sunday 9th May, 7.30, East Oxford Community Centre - the latest films from Palestine.
