Save Radley Lakes

rupert | 08.01.2007 10:55 | Oxford

Massive local opposition to the destruction of the last two remaining lakes at Radley has been ignored by power company RWE npower, and the decision to fill these lakes with toxic ash has been rail-roaded through by Oxfordshire County Council.
A squatted field centre has been opened on the lakeside to stop this envieonmental disaster, and they go to court on Wednesday 10th January to fight their eviction. Show your support!

Radley Lakes squatted field centre are due in Oxford County Court at 10
am Wednesday 10th January for eviction hearing bought by RWE npower. The
field centre was set up to study biodiversity of the lakes and prevent the
dumping of toxic fly ash from Didcot Power Station by RWE npower. Matt Morton,
Oxford Green Party member and environmental activist commented after
visiting Radley Lakes activist camp:

'This weekend I went to visit the Radley Lakes, which has just welcomed
a small dedicated group of activists in a last ditch attempt to stop
N-powers’ atmospheric- polluting-inefficient power-station in Didcot
from pumping fly ash into the last of its ecologically rich water bodies.
This has reminded me of how interconnected everything is: that the agents of
Climate Change are also the same agents of habitat and species loss.
That by working to limit climate change we will necessarily assist in the
preservation of our planets biodiversity.'

They will welcome support to maintain the field centre and stop the
destruction of the lakes.

Didcot Power Station does have an alternative!

The Officers of Oxfordshire County Council have been aware for some time that there was space at Sutton Courtenay gravel pit, next door to Didcot Power Station, because Waste Recycling Group, who own that site, have applied for planning permission to truck in waste from elsewhere and to continue to do so because their hole was bigger than they thought! Surprisingly, the Council believed nPower when they said in July they had looked at all the options - as if! The truth is they bought Sandles (House) and attached lake on the say so of the Minerals Officer's Department that there would not be a problem - OCC think all gravel pits are fair game to be filled in. However, this one has been in existence over 50 years and is no longer a gravel pit but a mature lake with loads of wildlife.

The Officers had to give NPower permission because they had already told them there wouldn't be a problem and having got themselves in this predicament, they manipulated the process to ensure that NPower got their permission. Ruth Kelly could have held a public enquiry but chose not to, despite her speech a few days earlier. See  http://www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1503898 This speech, to quote part, "a vision "of prosperous and cohesive communities, offering a safe, healthy and sustainable environment for all." These are not just fine words, they are an action plan. " belies the action her department took three days later.

Didcot A Power Station should have been closed down years ago when Didcot B Gas Powered Station came on line, but nPower greedily exploited the fact that coal is cheap and makes them loads of money.

So, anyone who has their electricity from NPower should switch. Try  http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/ or the WWF website which offers switching:  http://www.panda.org/about_wwf/what_we_do/climate_change/solutions/campaigns/powerswitch/index.cfm
