Stop the War Coalition national demonstration

STOP THE WAR COALITION NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION
2 DECEMBER 06 ~ RAF BRIZE NORTON
Coaches leaving from Central London 9.30am
Tickets: £10 / £8 (to book contact  office@stopwar.org.uk or 020 7278 6694)

Brize Norton is the most important British military base for maintaining the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the main transport base for sending troops and supplies in and out of the occupied countries.

In August this year it was used by US planes taking munitions to the Israeli Defense Force to bomb Lebanon.

In 2005 there was a lively peace camp, and a march through the town of Carterton to the main gate of the RAF base. The demonstration was led by former soldiers. Although Carterton is a forces town, the march received a very friendly response from the local people. Our protest is not against the individual soldiers, but against the government that has sent them to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan.

We want to see the largest possible demonstration on 2nd December.
Our message is simple. Bring the British troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Stop using British bases to support the occupations of those countries.
We want RAF Brize Norton to be used to bring all the troops home now.

The governments of Iraq and Afghanistan want allied troops to help them.

22.11.2006 10:43

Most of the people of Iraq and Afghanistan want the allied troops to stay and help them to defeat the terrorist insurgents who are trying to destroy their countries. The allied troops are there at the request of the democratic governments of Iraq and Afghanistan. Also it is not the governments of America and Britain to keep troops there any longer than they are needed. The only thing that is keeping allied troops in Iraq is the insurgents violence. The allied troops are needed to defend the populations of Iraq and Afghanistan from the insurgents. When the insurgency stops then all the allied troops will be able to come home. We cannot abandon Iraq and Afghanistan to terrorists to use those countries as a base for international terrorism.

Occupation not peacekeeping

"The governments of Iraq and Afghanistan want allied troops to help them."

I agree, especially ex-UNOCAL man Karzai put there by the Americans. In Iraq it's similar although Iraqi politicians have proved slightly more dissenting towards their occupiers. At the end of the day they know once the US and British leave they will be targeted as collaborators.

"Most of the people of Iraq and Afghanistan want the allied troops to stay and help them to defeat the terrorist insurgents who are trying to destroy their countries."

This is a totally subjective and unproven comment, could have come straight out of the mouth of Blair. Unless "commentator" has travelled widely in Iraq or Afghanistan recently, speaks Arabic or Afghani language or has any more substantial proof, let's hear it.

But Iraqis dont't ...

22.11.2006 17:52

Most Iraqis think that the presence of US troops causes more violence than it prevents, and what them out.

Afghanistan was occupied by the Taleban!

23.11.2006 10:27

An unfortunate consequence of withdrawing troops frm Afghanistan is the Taleban will take over! Why do you seem to want that? I don't like the situation either but a return of Taleban and by extension their Al Qaeda 'guests' is far worse for the region and indeed for our own security. The Taleban are not nice guys by default you are supporting them.

Lively peace camp.

24.11.2006 03:29

As one of those who attended the original peace camp at Brize Norton and actually helped carry the Stop the War coalitions national banner on the march I am pleased that the coalition is backing this protest, but there was only one representative there on that day. Are we to suppose that the Stop the War coalition is now taking the credit for Margaret and Rowlands work? Still although I won't be able to attend I hope that it goes well.
