The Man Made Plagues

In 1992 I walked into the University of North Dakota Library to do some research of Congressional documents. I remember quite well the bitter cold of -40 below 0 and wind chills that would freeze you to the bone with some speed. However this cold is a warm summer day at the beach, in comparison to the documents I found. Read more >>

March to stop Oxford Animal Lab - January 29th

The half built concrete structure that stands only ten minutes from Oxford city centre is a monument to cruelty and blind predjudice. Oxford University believe they can ignore the voices of those who expose their lies and deceit but not any longer. The chance to stop this animal abuse lab becoming a reality lies in our hands and we must not fail the countless thousands of animals that could one day become the future 'assets' of the university vivisectors. Oxford University does not want its academic image tarnished by its unwillingness to stop the discredited practice of abusing animals in the name of science but no recourse to injunctions and bully boy tactics will stop us SPEAKING out for the voiceless. Please make every effort to join the demo on the 29th January, your support is vital if we are to prevent the new lab from ever being built.

STOP THE OXFORD ANIMAL LAB, meet 12.30pm, Broad St, outside Balliol college, Oxford, OX1 3BJ.

crane occupation halts construction of europes largest nanotech centre.

From 8 a.m. this morning, a group of people has occupied a crane of the Minatec building site in Grenoble (france), to stop work for the day. The occupying ones, supported by protestors on the ground, unrolled a banner against nanotechnologies and distributed leaflets to passers by inviting them to come to join them (see leaflet below in french).

Contemporary Ideology Forum hosts Dr D. Parr on the Precautionary Principle

Dr Doug Parr, Chief Scientist of Greenpeace, will be talking the Precautionary Principle in relation to new technologies, GMOs, nanotechnology and wind power. He will argue that the Precautionary Principle can be applied in all these cases, but this can still lead to differing positions on what to do. This is because underlying some of these judgements is a differing set of values. He will attempt to draw out how this relates to three sets of people: (a) Greenpeace, (b) "the public" and (c) "the establishment" (both scientififc and political). His presentation will also draw out, with examples, how difficult it is for certain arguments to be heard which amounts to little better than censorship.
